Save on Energy Consumption and Costs with an Air Source Heat Pump

Heat pumpDid you know you can save energy and money by installing a heat pump?

Heat pumps are very efficient heating and cooling systems that can drastically reduce heating costs in the winter and efficiently cool your home in the summer.  Ductless heat pumps are also available for homeowners without a forced air heating system which offers significant energy savings over traditional baseboard electric heat.  In certain applications heat pump systems can save up to 60% from your current heating costs.

How do heat pumps work?

A heat pump has the ability to remove heat from the outdoor air and transfer this heat into the living space.  When cooling this process is reversed and the heat is removed from the inside air and rejected outside.  This is accomplished by using refrigerant as a heat transfer medium.  Although the outside air is cold in the winter it still holds heat, a heat pump will remove this heat and transfer it to the living space.

Central heat pumps utilize the duct work in your home and work with other sources of heat such as propane, oil, electric forced air.  Central heat pumps can provide heat at a lower cost than other sources of fuel until the outside temperature becomes extremely cold (temperature varies depending on alternate fuel source) and can be setup so the most cost effective method of heating will be utilized in relation to outside temperature.  Central heat pumps do require an alternate source of heat such as gas/oil /electric furnace.

Ductless heat pumps utilize the same technology as central heat pumps however are a self contained unit including an outside portion and a fan unit that is installed on an interior wall.  This is a very effective way to achieve economical heat if your residence does not have duct work.

Basic heat pump components are:

  • Outdoor coil (looks just like an air conditioning unit)
  • Forced air furnace electric, oil, propane, or gas
  • Duct work
  • Ductless heat pumps do not require duct work or a furnace
